The large number of residents affected by the Mount Semeru eruption who continue to face hardships, whether living in evacuation centers or near the eruption zone, has prompted PT Daikin Airconditioning Indonesia (Daikin) to step up its support. In synergy with Yayasan Benih Baik Indonesia, the Japanese air conditioning solution provider has distributed hundreds of basic food packages (sembako) to several surrounding areas impacted by the Semeru eruption.
"Amidst our deep sympathy for those affected by the Mount Semeru eruption, we have taken action and hope that this assistance will serve as encouragement for the community during this challenging time," stated Ching Khim Huat, President Director of Daikin. Previously, the symbolic handover of this support was presented to Andy F Noya, one of the co-founders of Yayasan Benih Baik Indonesia, at Daikin’s headquarters in Jakarta.
Located in Lumajang Regency, Mount Semeru is recorded as one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes. Since its major eruption earlier this year on December 4, volcanic activity has remained high, with a series of subsequent eruptions continuing at least until December 19. The impact of the eruption, combined with the ongoing high risk of hazards such as lava flows and pyroclastic clouds, has forced many residents to remain in temporary shelters, while others struggle to carry out daily activities and meet their basic needs.
Following the symbolic handover, Daikin staff, alongside representatives from Benih Baik, took direct part in delivering the aid to two villages impacted by the Semeru eruption: Dusun Wono Agung in Sumber Mujur Village and Dusun Wono Sari.
"Beyond expressing our solidarity, this direct distribution allows us to witness firsthand the conditions faced by the local community," explained Stefanus Danu Prasetyo Abadi, Head of Daikin’s Surabaya and Surrounding Area Branch, while overseeing the food package distribution. He noted that gaining direct insight into the situation of those affected by the Semeru eruption opens up further opportunities for Daikin to provide continued support for long-term community recovery post-disaster.
